Top Ten Tuesday: Drake "I'm Upset"

Here's the deal. Drake has broken a record that the Beatles set back in the 60's. He has 7 songs on the Top Ten this week and with no research whatsoever, I believe the Beatles had the record with 5. Here's this week's top ten. I don't normally post it, but it's pretty exceptional.

1. Drake - Nice For What
2. Drake - Nonstop
3. Cardi B, Bad Bunny, & J Balvin - I Like It
4. Drake - God's Plan
5. Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B - Girls Like You
6. Drake - In My Feelings
7. Drake - I'm Upset
8. Drake - Emotionless
9. Drake featurin Michael Jackson - Don't Matter to Me
10. XXXTENTACION - Sad!

So I went on Drake's YouTube channel to see if there was a video for one of these songs that I hadn't posted yet. And boy was there. If you're a fan of DeGrassi, strap in. But I suppose if you're a fan of DeGrassi, you've already seen this. Strap in anyway

Top Ten Tuesday: Ella Mai "Boo'd Up"

This song is amazing. I don't want to overhype it, but this song is going to be what people put on when they want to get nostalgic about Summer 2018. It had an old school feel but I also had no idea where it might go. And the video is lovely and fun. I'm so glad I picked this song for this week's post!

Top Ten Tuesday: Juice Wrld "Lucid Dreams"

Ok, it may be that I've been listening to too much Blink-182 recently, but I feel like this song could have just as easily have been a pop-punk song, maybe in like 2003. The chords and the lyrics and lots of other stuff. It was very interesting to listen to it through that lens. Tell me if you can hear it. I really liked this song.

This song is really catchy and I enjoyed the video so much more than I thought I would. At first, I was like "That's not Cardi B, that's Camila Cabello" but then I waited a sec and I was like "Ohhhh"

Top Ten Tuesday: Lil Baby & Drake "Yes Indeed"

This song is...fine. I don't know if it's associated with some sort of meme or just being hyped because of Drake or what. It doesn't seem like an amazing enough song to be at #6, though. Let me know what context I'm missing, if any

Top Ten Tuesday: Childish Gambino "This is America"

TRIGGER WARNING: This video contains graphic depictions of gun violence.

So this is the video for Childish Gambino's "This is America" which debuts at #1 this week. I thought it was powerful and chilling and excellently done. It's horrifying, but it feels very important.

And here's a video interpreting some of the symbolism in the video

Top Ten Tuesday: Ariana Grande "No Tears Left To Cry"

This song debuted at #3 this week. The song and the video both kept subverting my expectations which was kind of delightful. I like the song. It's catchy! And I like that people are still making music videos that are very engaging to watch

Tuesday, April 24, 2018

Top Ten Tuesday: Nicki Minaj "Chun Li"

This one rocketed from 92 -> 10 this week! I love that she named this song after a Street Fighter II character.

And it's a very interesting video (I wrote the first paragraph before I watched it) although I wish there had been more Street Fighter refs in it

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Top Ten Tuesday: Drake "Nice For What"

This is the first song in the history of the Hot 100 to replace another song by the same artist, where both songs debuted at #1. Which is pretty cool. I like when history gets made. It also samples "Ex-Factor" by Lauryn Hill, and I hope that leads to a whole new group of people discovering THAT amazing album.

I like this song and video quite a bit!

New Countdown: That Nostalgic Feeling of a Comatose Computer

Moon Taxi

There was a time, early on in this countdown's life, where I would constantly have computer problems and would have to figure out ways around them. That is what I dealt with, with this episode as my computer has fallen very ill. But I am hopeful that it is on the mend. This episode was entirely recorded while I waited for Nicole from Apple to call me back. Which is not a dig against Nicole. She has been awesome and I recognize that she is not only dealing with me.

ANYways. This was a good countdown. I hope that the musical differences between my vocals and the songs isn't too jarring. Enjoy!

Top Ten Tuesday - XXXTentacion - Sad!

This song is fine. Nothing too special, but it wasn't as off the wall as I was anticipating. It should be noted that this guy is very very very controversial in terms of his run-ins with the law and history of domestic violence and lots of really bad stuff.

Top Ten Tuesday: Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line "Meant To Be"

I have to admit, when I see Florida Georgia Line associated with something, I'm hesitant. Bro Country is about at the very end of my interest list and, like it or not, they are one of the Icons of Bro Country.

That said, I really liked this song. It's straightforward and very catchy and it ends on a cute, funny note.

How many plays on that band's name do you think I can use for titles for this countdown before they're off the Top Ten? I bet this isn't the last time by a longshot. :)

Top Ten Tuesday: BlocBoy JB featuring Drake "Look Alive"

This was a good video. I'm a little surprised that it has debuted at #6, but it feels like the sort of song that perhaps has some sort of Internet Meme/Dance Video attached to it? It is entirely possible that I'm just not aware of it yet. I like when Drake is silly.

Debuting at #7 is this song from the Black Panther soundtrack that basically amounts to a new Kendrick Lamar album. Or, like at least a mixtape. I'm very excited about it. It came out on Friday, but I haven't listened to anything but this and the other single from it. This song is so great.

New Countdown: Stethoscope Bulbs

The National

So, on this week's show, there is a product being sold by a certain band and I had no idea what it was at the time. But then, after I finished recording, I went over to my friend's house and her daughter had one. It's a PopSocket for a cell phone and I never would have thought of that in a million years. I guessed it was the end of a stethoscope and that was what I guessed. So, I'm silly. Enjoy the episode!

Throwback Thursday: 1960

Here we are, about to introduce the truly BIG DOG in the Instrumental #1's Game. This is a song that spent 9 WEEKS at #, almost double the next longest run.

Incidentally, here's the Wikipedia synopsis of what A Summer Place was, which is something I've never known.

A Summer Place is a 1959 romantic drama film based on Sloan Wilson's 1958 novel of the same name, about teenage lovers from different social classes who get back together twenty years later, and then must deal with the passionate love affair of their own teenage children by previous marriages.

Percy Faith - Theme from A Summer Place (2/22/60-4/18/60)

And here is where I first heard of this song:

Two instrumentals that I'm not at all familiar with, though I am familiar with the artists from SNL and Barenaked Ladies fame, respectively! I would also like to point out that this means that 1961 started with nearly two solid months of instrumental #1's!

I enjoyed both of these, and i bet you will too!

Lawrence Welk - Calcutta (2/13/61-2/27/61)

Bert Kaempfert - Wonderland by Night (1/9/61-1/30/61)

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

Top Ten Tuesday: Bruno Mars & Cardi B "Finesse"

2017 Artists of the Year!!!!

Throwback Thursday: 1968

We've got two songs for the year 1968. I was confused because I thought, "But I know the words to 'Grazing in the Grass'!" And then I realized it was an instrumental cover. The 60's were crazy, man. AND HOLD THE PHONE. The instrumental was the original! The version that I know by The Friends of Distinction came out a year later. That really is insane.

Hugh Masekela - Grazing in the Grass (7/20/68-7/27/68)

This second song was at #1 for 5 weeks, which we haven't seen since the first week we were doing this theme, with Baauer's "Harlem Shake" staying at #1 for 5 weeks as well! There's only one instrumental that stayed at #1 for longer than 5 weeks. Can you guess what it is?

Paul Mauriat - Love is Blue (2/10/68-3/9/68)
