Top Ten Tuesday: Sam Smith "Too Good at Goodbyes"

Sam Smith is back in the Top Ten for the first time in maybe like 2 years? This is a very catchy, very Sam Smith-y song. I like it quite a bit, even if it is VERY sad

New Countdown: Play it Where it Lays

Frightened Rabbit

Happy 350th episode! It's hard to believe that I've been doing this countdown for roughly 7.5 years!

Bit of a theme this week, but mostly just a lot of really great songs! So, enjoy!

Top Ten Tuesday: J Balvin & Willy William featuring Beyonce "Mi Gente"

This is one of those songs that, when I hit play, I was like "OHHH *THIS* song!!!" This is a very catchy song and I really like the video. It's just people dancing and then you follow the bouncing heads of the singers for all of the lyrics (as well as knowing who is singing.) It's very cool. Enjoy!

New Countdown: Butterfly vs Man

We have got some EXCELLENT tunes for you today and some interesting tidbits in the intros. Can you guess which songwriter cites a Chinese proverb as the guiding force behind their new album?

Enjoy!

Top Ten Tuesday: Demi Lovato "Sorry Not Sorry"

I wouldn't say that I'm a HUGE fan of Demi Lovato's music. It's not for me, and that is totally ok. This song is fairly catchy and the video is pretty enjoyable to watch. Make sure you watch until the end. I feel like she has a cool personality and this video went a long way to reinforce that

New Countdown: Feels Like (the end of) Summer

Frightened Rabbit

I'm playing a little bit of catch up, so this episode includes a run-down of how songs did on my Songs of the Summer chart, but that's ok because the weather still feels like the first week of September anyway!

Enjoy the tunes!!

Top Ten Tuesday: Portugal. The Man "Feel It Still"

Hey this song should sound familiar to people that listen to my podcast! After weeks and weeks of being at #1 on the Alternative Songs chart, PTM have finally made it to the Hot 100 Top Ten, going 14->10 this week. Congratulations!

Throwback Thursday: 1992 (14 Weeks at #1)

This is the penultimate edition of Throwback Thursday: Backwards Through the 90's! Next week will be the song with the most weeks at #1 in the 90's (and, until it was recently tied, of all time). And then we'll start something new.

Enjoy another classic!

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You (11/28/92-2/27/93)

Tuesday, September 19, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: Logic featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid "1-800-273-8255"

Wow. This video is intense. But VERY good. I read yesterday that 1-800-273-8255 (which is the number for the Suicide Prevention Lifeline) is now the highest charting telephone number of all time, edging out Tommy Tutone's "867-5309 (Jenny)", which I think is probably a good thing.

The song is good, too. Which is nice :)

Another absolute classic. Enjoy :)

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: Taylor Swift "...Ready For It?"

With this song entering the Top 5 at the same time that "Look What You Made Me Do" is at #1, Taylor Swift becomes the first woman to have two songs in the Top 5 at the same time since she acheived the same feat in 2015.

This album is going to be bananas, I think. In a good way...probably :)

Top Ten Tuesday: Taylor Swift "Look What You Made Me Do"

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Taylor Swift's new song blasts up to #1. It robs "Despacito" of breaking the record for most weeks at #1 (though it could very well take that honor next week or the week after. Basically, any other time "Despacito" is at #1, it's a record breaker.) and the video is pretty entertaining, in my opinion (especially the part at the end :) )

Throwback Thursday: 1997 (14 Weeks at #1)

Well I scheduled this to go up almost 5 months ago, but here it is! We're getting near the end of this journey through the 90's and I have recently figured out what's next for Throwback Thursday. It's going to be good. Enjoy!

Ok, whoa. I totally didn't realize that TODAY is the 20th anniversary of Diana's death. That is so weird. I just had this feeling like "I think I'll post that Throwback Thursday video that I've been sitting on". Life is strange.

Elton John - Candle in the Wind 1997/Something About the Way You Look Tonight (10/11-1/10/98)

Top Ten Tuesday: Shawn Mendes "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back"

Ok I really liked this video and I think this song is really good. I may need to check out the Shawn Mendes album because I have really enjoyed the songs I've heard from it.

Top Ten Tuesday: Cardi B "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)"

This is the song with the biggest gain in airplay for the week as it moves 8->3. I heard it a number of times this past weekend on several Spotify chart playlists. It's pretty catchy.

Reading Quest Update: Day 7 (August 19)

Name: Rob
Class: Rogue
Level: 1
EXP: 30
HP: 72
Currently Reading: The Short Drop (33 pages read)

Rob blasted through the Magic: The Gathering book and then sailed recklessly through Candide (one word title).

Candide was kind of an odd one. I felt some of the political and religious satire flying right over my head, but I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I expected to! There were some incredibly violent parts and some really funny parts, too.

Moving on from there, I started reading The Short Drop (partially obscured face on the cover) and, after going through Candide, this is going to be a breeze. I'm still in the exposition part, but it's quite enjoyable.

This Quest is really fun and I feel like it's going quite well!

Top Ten Tuesday: Charlie Puth "Attention"

This is a pretty catchy song. And the video is fairly straightforward. I would have loved to have seen a little more acting on his part when she starts throwing stuff, but he's a musician, not an actor, so it's fine!

Reading Quest Update: Day 1 (August 13)

Name: Rob
Class: Rogue
Level: 1
EXP: 10
HP: 27
Currently Reading: Prologue to Battle For Zendikar: Collected Stories (172 pages read)

Rob came out of the gate strong as I read about half of the Prologue to Battle For Zendikar: Collected Stories (Which is what I'm reading for the "Books with < 500 Ratings on GoodReads" quest).

I feel a little weird because this book says that it is 380 pages, but the "pages" are probably about 1/4-1/2 the size of an actual book page. So I'm not sure how that should count towards HP (I get +1 HP per 10 pages I read, which helps towards the final score)

I'm quite enjoying this book so far. I like getting the story behind these Magic: The Gathering sets that I've played with. Occasionally, they'll have a piece of art featured in the story and it's fun to look up what card that art is from.

After this, I think I'm going to dive into Candide.

This has been fun so far!!!

A Reading Quest!

I normally post about music, but I'm going to be doing this Reading Quest event and there's supposed to be kind of a home page for my activities with it.

You can find details here but the deal is that I'm going to be a Rogue (I chose from these options):

The Reading Quest Character Classes

I need to figure out what kind of Rogue I'm going to be and maybe like, what my name is, etc. Maybe my Rogue's name is "Rob" (like Robin Hood, but, you know, casual.)

And so Rob will follow the bottom path on this sheet:

 Reading Quest Board

And then I can earn points and all sorts of stuff explained in the post linked above, but really, it's a way to switch up how I'm selecting my books to read.

So, from 8/13-9/10, I will be reading from the following list:

A Banned Book - The Autobiography of Malcom X
A Book Cover with a Partially Obscured Face - The Short Drop (which has this cover):
Image result for the short drop

A Book with <500 -="" are="" ebooks="" from.="" gathering-related="" going="" google="" i="" m="" magic:the="" on="" p="" pick="" ratings="" several="" that="" there="" to="">
A Book Published by a Small Press: A Monster Calls (published by Candlewick Press), which appears to be fairly small

A Book With a One Word Title - Candide (it has a one word title and it's super short!)

So that's what I'm going to be doing for the next month or so. You can sign up too!

I want to give credit to CW from Read, Think, Ponder for the artwork on the two things I pasted above!

Rob, out!

Top Ten Tuesday: French Montana featuring Swae Lee "Unforgettable"

A lovely video of a very catchy song that takes a HUGE TURN at the end. I do tend to like when all the videos from an album tell one story. That can be a fun way to do things!

This doesn't have anything to do with this song, but we might be in the middle of some history-making right now. "Despacito" is getting very close to breaking Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men's record for 16 weeks at #1. So watch out for if that happens!

This is a pretty straightforward song, I suppose. It's a little right over the plate. Blue jeans, driving metaphors, etc. But it's pretty catchy. I didn't hate it but I did wish it was a little better, you know?

And with this, I am officially as caught up as I can be on countdowns! It's because of my own rules that I have to wait until Saturday before I record (Artist of the Month!) but it still feels great. I hope you've been enjoying the avalanche of countdowns! Is this what a smorgasbord looks like?

Top Ten Tuesday: DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller "Wild Thoughts"

This is quite a steamy video, but fairly straightforward. I wonder if we'll look back in 20 years and shake our heads in wonder at the phenomenon of DJ Khaled.

Also, this song uses the guitar part from "Maria, Maria" by Santana (featuring Wyclef Jean and The Product G&B) which was #1 back in April of 2000. I will include the video for that below as well!

New Countdown: The Way The Whole Thing Ends

The Revivalists

Don't panic! The title is a reference to something and also to the end of the month of May (yeah, chart dates are weird. Believe me, I know :) ). I wouldn't put such a clickbaity title if it actually reflected me hanging up my hat. Which I guess is kind of weird. Like, "If you see something like that, know that it's probably me not being serious about it."

Top Ten Tuesday: Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber "Despacito"

So a Justin Bieber feature takes a collaboration to #1 again this week (he's the first artist to ever have two new #1 songs in two consecutive weeks), but the really cool thing about this song being at #1 is that it's the first mostly Spanish language song to go to #1 since "Macarena" in 1996! That is insane.

The remix that features Bieber doesn't have a video (yet) but the non-remix with just Fonsi and Yankee does, so I'll post them both

Top Ten Tuesday: DJ Khaled featuring Justin Biever, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne

This very catchy song joins 27 previous songs that have debuted at #1 on the Hot 100. I'll put in the complete list below the video. I don't think it's any surprise that this collaboration was super popular. Bieber and Lil Wayne alone would have done wonders but you also have Quavo from the super popular Migos and also the amazing Chance the Rapper. So this is no surprise to me. The song probably wouldn't even have to be as good as it is to debut at the top, if I'm being honest.

And here's that full list!

New Countdown: Hip-Hop Influenced Alternative Hits!

Tuesday, April 4, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: KYLE featuring Lil Yachty "iSpy"

I love that this guy is just leaning in to his given name and just capitalizing it and getting all in your face about it. Like, KYLE!

This video is so much fun and the song is very fun too, even if there are a couple of questionable parts.

Enjoy!

New Countdown: Two Shall Fall, So That Two May Rise

Judah and the Lion

These post titles are getting slightly biblical lately, aren't they? Weird. Remember when they were, overall, basically just punny? I sure do :)

This is a fun episode and the start of a new month! Enjoy!

Top Ten Tuesday: The Chainsmokers & Coldplay "Something Just Like This"

This song moved 56 -> 5 this week and I have to imagine it's because of this performance which has racked up nearly 5 million views in 11 days. Insane. Good song, though. A nice combination of both of their sounds

New Countdown: I'm Still Alive!

Green Day
I don't know what it is, but as I was listening to "Still Breathing" tonight, it really hit me. I'm still here, doing my thing almost 7 years in. And it still feels pretty pure. I don't have a lot of listeners, but I have fun making these and the people that do listen seem to enjoy them and that's really all I can ask for. I love making these shows and I'm just going to keep on doing them for as long as I can. Thanks for listening :)

Now let's get to the music, SHALL WE?!???

Throwback Thursday: 1994 (11 Weeks at #1)

I love this song and "I Can Love You Like That" so much. They remind me of riding my bike home from school in Annapolis in 1994.

All-4-One - I Swear (5/21/7/30)

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: Bruno Mars "That's What I Like"

I can only find live performances of this song, but that may be for the best because I think Bruno Mars is so so SO entertaining to watch live. He OWNS that stage

The 1975

Hey there! I've got some Alternative Music for you! You ready? Then let's not dilly-dally, shall we?

I'm cold free and the Grammys were last weekend so I talk about them for a little while!

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday: 1996 (11 Weeks at #1)

Missed last week, but we're getting into the homestretch, so maybe it's ok!

This video will ALWAYS remind me of VH1.

Top Ten Tuesday (Part Two: All Tomorrow's Tuesdays): Katy Perry featuring Skip Marley "Chained to the Rhythm"

Here's a song that entered the top ten THIS week!

What a cool, fun concept :) And a pretty catchy song, to boot!

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: Lady Gaga "Million Reasons"

This song came on my Pandora the other day and I was like "Wow this is amazing! Who is it?" and I looked and was delighted that it was Lady Gaga. I love this kind of departure! Enjoy!

Oh...I guess this is from last week's Top Ten. I forgot that yesterday was a holiday. Maybe I'll do another Top Ten tomorrow!

P.O.S

Well, I think the sick voice is finally gone! And there's some new music on the countdown! So everything is looking way way up! I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoy putting these countdowns together. It's a fun way to spend an hour!

Top Ten Tuesday: Big Sean "Bounce Back"

Big Sean performed this on SNL and, though I tend to be kind of interested in his stuff, it completely lost me in the intro. One of these days, I'll get around to listening to the whole thing.

...Enjoy!

But for real, let me know what you think of this!

Throwback Thursday: 1997 (11 Weeks at #1)

How crazy is it that no song spent only 9 or 10 weeks at #1 in the entirety of the 90's? That is insane.

This was ALL OVER the radio in the summer of 97. I have come back around on it and I can kind of like it again, but it was definitely one of those "played out" songs. One of the best examples, actually.

I think this was the #1 song in the Billboard magazine I have from that year. I would imagine I got it at some point during the summer, so probably, right?

Puff Daddy and Faith Evans featuring 112 - I'll Be Missing You (6/14-8/23)

New Countdown: Spectrum of a Sickness

Judah and the Lion
Over the course of this recording, I got sick and then got better. The sickness seems to happen every spring but you don't always get to hear the progression. Think of it as something of a bonus as a reward for your patience :)

Top Ten Tuesday: Alessia Cara "Scars to Your Beautiful"

This is a lovely song and a lovely video with a lovely message!

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: Drake "Fake Love"

This is a 9.5 minute video. It's mostly not the song. But the song is in there. It's like two full scenes and then the song plays for the rest. But half of the song plays over credits. So I mean, it's like on some albums where there are Skits between songs. Only the skits are several minutes long in this case.

Enjoy!

New Countdown: In Sickness and In Health

Judah and the Lion

Hello! It's a new episode that has taken me a little bit to get out to you, because I got sick in the middle of recording. Not as gross as it sounds. My voice just changes around #3. So look forward to that!

Throwback Thursday: 1992 (8 Weeks at #1)

I had this album (Totally Krossed Out) and the follow-up (Da Bomb) on cassette and I listen to them. A LOT. So this one is near and dear to me.

Also, it looks like this was the first song of the 90's to spend more than 7 weeks at #1!

Kris Kross - Jump (4/25-6/13)

Tuesday, January 24, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: The Chainsmokers "Paris"

The Chainsmokers continue their assault on the Top Ten with, I think, their 4th appearance in the past 9 months!

Thursday, January 19, 2017

Throwback Thursday: 1993 (8 Weeks at #1)

Two more songs by the heavyweights of these 90's Throwback Thursdays: Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson, who are ALL OVER the 90's Number Ones.

Mariah Carey - Dreamlover (9/11-10/30)

Janet Jackson - That's The Way Love Goes (5/15-7/3)

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday: Ed Sheeran "Shape of You"

This one DEBUTS at #1. And with good reason. This song is catchy as hell. I hope it is a huge hit and people associate it with 2017 for years to come!

Top Ten Tuesday: Migos feat. Lil Uzi Vert "Bad and Boujee"

A coworker was singing the hook to this song at work the other night and now here it is going from 13->2! Good job Alexa! Way to keep up on these things :)

This song doesn't do much for me, but I think it might be interesting to look at in 5 years as sign of the times.
