2016 Artists of the Year

Red Hot Chili Peppers

So here we are in 2017 and it's time for another Artists of the Year countdown. A LOT of familiar faces that got shoved into the bottom 10 of the Top 20. So it makes for a very interesting list. I hope you enjoy it and I'll see you very soon for our RSP (Reg. Sched. Prog.)

New Countdown: Step Inside My Hyundai

The White Stripes
This is an episode I did mostly in one sitting, which is something I haven't done since the night of the 2015 Grammy Awards. Sometimes the spirit really moves me and today is one of those times! Which is awesome!

So, enjoy! There are some GREAT tunes to listen to.

New Countdown: Truly Alternative

Bishop Briggs

It's time for another episode of Alternative hits! I was thinking that so few of these songs are what would typically be thought of as "Alternative" in the 90's definition. And I think that's a very good thing.

Enjoy!

New Countdown: August When It's an Adjective

Cage the Elephant

And we're into August now! The big reveal of the first Artist of the Month happens in this episode (for those of you who don't regularly read the blog...)!!!

It's a good one and it has new Dessa in it. So I mean, what are you waiting for? Me to stop writing things? Oh, ok.

Artist of the Month: August 2016: The White Stripes

So we're kicking this thing off with a bang! If you didn't listen to whichever countdown it was where I talked about it (maybe 304?), I'm going to listen to every studio album AND live album that they put out this month and I'm also going to make sure I listen to at least one White Stripes song a day. Oh and I think one of the bonus songs from each countdown in August will be a White Stripes song.

I got them from hitting Shuffle Songs. The Under Great Northern Lights version of "We Are Going to Be Friends" came on and that was that! I'm looking forward to hearing some of the older stuff that I haven't explored before.

I will attempt to do a monthly wrap-up post, as well. It's looking very Red and White for me this month! :)

One Year, 100 Albums: #18 White Stripes "Elephant"

The White Stripes Elephant, 2003

I featured this album for a month a couple of months ago on my podcast, so I feel sort of like I'm ALWAYS talking about this album. Fortunately, it's a fantastic album that I don't mind talking about.

In the months leading up to my purchase of this album, "Seven Nation Army" was all over the radio and MTVU (which was the station that one of the dining halls always had on. I kind of think I count this as "the radio" in my mind sometimes). So one day I went into Circuit City and, on the recommendation of a number of friends, listened to the samples of a couple of songs from the album. (Background: CC (along with many other stores) had these devices in their CD sections where you could scan the CD and read info about the band and the album and listen to samples of the tracks on the album.)

The reason I purchased the album was because of the sample I heard of the song "Black Math". They picked the part of the song where the guitars go from sluggish and trippy back into the fast and driving speed that the song is at most of the time. I love tempo changes in songs and so that, plus knowing how amazing "Seven Nation Army" is, led to me purchasing the album.

It's been more than a decade since I bought the album and it has transformed into almost a Classic Rock album for me. There are songs that hearken back to the 60's and 70's ("There's No Home For You Here""It's True That We Love One Another"), and then there are those weird, out of time White Stripes songs ("Ball and Biscuit" "The Hardest Button to Button" "Little Acorns"). And it's the combination of these two sounds that made them the amazing band they were. It's a hell of an album. It's all over the place and once you learn the twists and turns.

New Countdown: White Stripes on the Bonus Segment, We Hardly Knew Ye

Arctic Monkeys
Now, THIS is a more typical show, in terms of deadline. I'm not early. I'm not late. I'm right where I usually am: typing up the blog post for a podcast at nearly 1 AM. It's a sultry, film-noirish life I lead, isn't it? (Just noticed the word "noirish" looks like "no irish", which is a stance I certainly don't hold any truck with. Irish Welcome!)

There's a very indulgent bonus feature thing in this episode, but you have to get through the first half to find it. Happy hunting!

New Countdown: Deadline Achieved!

Young the Giant
Well, last week was about not meeting a deadline I set for myself. But I'm writing THIS on Saturday morning! So we're doing great over here. My mother-in-law is set to take care of the kids this afternoon and evening and my wife and I are going to try to achieve a good mixture of relaxation and responsibility-accomplishment!

The countdown is really in a very fun and enjoyable place, these days, you guys. Maybe it feels like this every spring when the winter is ending and everything is looking up. Having great music to listen to is the delicious, hard-rocking icing on the cake!

New Countdown: Not Making Deadlines and Having it Be Ok.

Cage the Elephant
Beware the Ides of March....because the Rock Music might sneak up behind you and stab you in the back...but, like, in a good way? Haha. I think that completely made sense. Although if there's some sort of database for "Rock Music is a gateway to drugs and violence", I'm probably not helping the cause along any.

Ah! I forgot to play any Dropkick Murphys for St Patrick's Day!!! Oh well, maybe I'll think of it next week and do it after the fact.

Enjoy! :-D

New Countdown. Blame It On the Rock (music)

The White Stripes (ca Icky Thump)
Ugh, Spring Forward is going to suuuuck, but at least we'll have alternative music to listen to as we feel all disjointed and weird. Try not to be late for anything, but if you are, blame it on the Rock (music). The Rock (music) can take it. Plus, any non-Daylight-Savings excuse will probably be welcome to any employer/celebrant/rendezvous co-participant.

New Countdown!: Murder and Anagrams

Cage the Elephant
It starts SO strong and then by the end it all starts to unravel. Of course, it's still a fantastic episode definitely worth listening to and playing for your friends, it's just that you might preface this one with "Ok, I know he sounds crazy by the end, but...."

New Countdown: Have no Fear! The COUNTDOWN is here!!!

Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar at the 2014 Grammy Awards
Late again. It's beginning to feel like 2010, based on how awful I've been about the punctuality of this podcast. What can I say? Sometimes, life gets in the way. But this isn't going to derail anything so don't start getting those worries in your pretty little heads.

As it happened, being late allowed me to do more immediate Grammy coverage than I would have been able to do if I'd tried to report from NEXT Sunday. So I guess that's a blessing in disguise.

This countdown has a lot of bonus songs in it, very few of which I planned beforehand. It's not as much as LAST week's, but it's still a lot.

Young the Giant

Ok. Hi. So I know that everyone was super disappointed not to see the new countdown up yesterday, but the truth is that we were doing some major cleaning around the house and when I looked up, it was WAY later than I thought, and it was just not going to work to stay up putting this together

BUT I think you'll be ok with it. What I'm saying is that this countdown is literally CHOCK FULL of countdowny goodness so I feel alright with putting it up a little late. Enjoy! See you in about 100 minutes!

New Countdown: Welcome Back, Welcome Back, Welcome Back!

Arctic Monkeys
Welcome back to another year of AFDAT10C's! Haha. That looks ridiculous. I used to read the magazine Star Wars Insider and Anthony Daniels who played C-3P0 had a column in which he used that kind of initialism all the time and it referred to things from like lots of articles prior and was both funny and aggravating.

......

Welp, enjoy the episode! ;-)

New Countdown! Thanksgiving! December! Oh My!

The Neighbourhood
Well, I'm typing this on Tuesday night because I don't want to be fussing with recording and posting and all of that hooey (which I love!) down at my folks' place this week/weekend. So it feels REALLY early, but I kind of like it.

I just want to thank you for coming to listen to my podcast. If you're reading this, then I'm thankful for you and all the steps that led you to my little corner of the Internet. I hope that you're happy you came when you leave and that you'll eagerly come back soon!

New Countdown: Surprise!!!

Fitz & the Tantrums

A great episode that had some surprises that even surprised me!...as they were happening! Stay Tuned to see what I mean!

...remember that movie Stay Tuned? John Ritter and....Shelley Long? vs the Devil who has them trapped in a TV and is trying to kill them and get their souls? Pretty decent, if I recall.

New Countdown: In Under the Wire!

Fitz and the Tantrums
This was one of those episodes where you look at the clock and then you look at how much more recording you have before you can go to bed, and your heart sinks just a little. But I think it turned out ok :) I'm just not going to talk a lot on this post.

All I'm going to do is to link you to the Shortlist Voting that I talk about in the episode. Please vote!!!

New Countdown: Done Early! Feelin productive!!

Capital Cities
Well, I'm writing this on Saturday morning. It feels very weird to be done with the podcast already. Not bad. Not at all bad, in fact. Just weird.

My son gets baptized tomorrow and we're having family come visit us. Unfortunately not as much family as we thought we would be having before this morning, but still a lot of family and that's a good thing!

New Countdown! 500 Posts!!

The White Stripes in 2003
Well, you can definitely feel how tired I am by the end of this one. Sometimes the podcast just takes longer and I get distracted by watching Batdad Vines. Fortunately/Unfortunately, it's Daylight Savings tonight, so it's not actually as late as it feels and maybe this is my way of acclimating? Who knows.

I meant to mention that this post was my 500th on the podcast, but I forgot. So let me do it here.

THIS POST IS MY 500TH!!!

In about a month and a half, this blog will turn 6. So that means...an average of about 83 a year. Or 7 a month. Or about a post ever 4 or so days. But the thing is that 299 of those 500 have been in the past 2 years. And 392 of them have been in the last 3 years. So you could say I've picked up the pace.

Wait. That's counting my 6th birthday as today, but I still have a month or so to go till then. But it's pretty close. So, the averages aren't exactly right but the 299 and 392 stats still are.

Oh, the podcast? Sure. Here it is. And thanks for coming to my blog. Here's to 500 more posts before we all simultaneously decide to stop using the Internet and go outside for a global kickball tournament.
