Bonus Countdown: All-Time Top Alternative Songs (ca 2013) (Part 1)

Gorillaz
As you read this, I am in a van driving to Disney, Florida. I hope you are having a great Saturday so far and I hope this episode makes it better! You should go for a drive, too. Let's sync up our experiences! I'll try to put this on around noon (when it posts) as long as I think of it.

So in 2013 Billboard celebrated 25 years of our beloved Alternative Songs (nee Hot Modern Rock Tracks) chart. We celebrated by listening to the first Top Ten. Now we're going to spend the next two weeks counting down the Top 20 on this list that is just over 2 years old. I don't know how the past two years have affected things and I guess we won't know until 2038, when the chart celebrates 50 years ;-) (jk. I'm sure that there'll be something to commemorate the 30th anniversary)

So enjoy Part 1 of 2 Bonus Countdowns!

New Countdown: The Boy Who Played With Alternative Songs

Walk the Moon

If I'm being honest, this podcast is late because I'm really really into the book I'm reading. And publishing it on time fell slightly below just blasting through it. It's The Girl Who Played With Fire which is the sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It's super super compelling.

Please don't take my choices to indicate a bad week on the countdown, though. It was definitely a good one. We have such great songs on the show these days. Enjoy!

PS. Have you noticed that a full 60% of the songs on the Top Ten are by artists with names that start with either F or M? Weeeird.

Young the Giant

Ok. Hi. So I know that everyone was super disappointed not to see the new countdown up yesterday, but the truth is that we were doing some major cleaning around the house and when I looked up, it was WAY later than I thought, and it was just not going to work to stay up putting this together

BUT I think you'll be ok with it. What I'm saying is that this countdown is literally CHOCK FULL of countdowny goodness so I feel alright with putting it up a little late. Enjoy! See you in about 100 minutes!

Monthly Poll: U2 - Zooropa

So I want to focus a little more on these Alternative Album Grammy Winners that I'm playing for bonus songs on the Countdown. So I think, on the first Monday of every month, I'm going to do a little retrospective poll related to the album from the proceeding month.

So, January's album was U2's Zooropa

Please answer the following questions in the comments section. (If you don't have an answer, feel free to skip the question)

1. What is your favorite track on Zooropa? (Spotify)

  • Zooropa
  • Babyface
  • Numb
  • Lemon
  • Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
  • Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car
  • Some Days Are Better Than Others
  • The First Time
  • Dirty Day
  • The Wanderer
2. What is your favorite U2 album?
3. Which do you feel should have won the Grammy, if not Zooropa:
  • Belly Star
  • Nirvana In Utero
  • Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream
  • R.E.M. Automatic For the People

Well, Billboard changed the layout of their site between Friday night and Saturday morning. It's so disorienting but I'm managing. Thanks for your concern :)

New Countdown: "I Have a Dream" Version

Hey everyone!

Well, for the first year, I will be acknowledging the holiday on Monday. Not because I have made a point of not acknowledging it before, but because this is the first time that I've remembered that the holiday is on its way in time to make note of it on the show!

This is a good show, if I do say so myself, but there are one or two intros that I think I may have let my mind lead my tongue way off the beaten path. Oh well, such is life, I suppose :)

And we're back! New Countdown, New Year!

It's 2013 and we find ourselves where we always do in the hazy morning of the week after an Artists of the Year Countdown: Back to work. It's a countdown this week that kicks things off with 3 songs we've never heard on the show before. So that's fun! (and 2 other bands as well ;-) )
