It's a historic day on the charts! For the first time, Mariah Carey's classic Christmas song has finally made it into the Top Ten. It was released on 11/1/1994. Insane. More than 23 years after its release, it finally makes it! And we're here to see it.

It's a rainy and gross Monday morning, so here's one of my favorite Mariah Carey songs that spent about a month at #1 at the end of 1993 and the beginning of 1994. I missed posting it on Thursday, but I think it'll be good to hear today!

This week, we have two R&B/Hip-Hop videos with huge extended action movie-style music videos. I love this instinct. To have the song going, but to really just have the musicians playing Action Hero. Love it.

Also, there's "MMMBop". And I love "MMMBop". I bought the cassingle and eagerly anticipated getting the album for my 14th birthday and I loved the album. It is a SOLID pop song and I love it.

The Heights - How Do You Talk to an Angel? (11/14-11/21)

This is a song from a fictional band called The Heights from a tv show called The Heights which appears to have been something like the Glee of its day. Only far, far less popular. Although I suppose Glee never had a song go to #1 at all, so maybe this show was more popular than I give it credit for. The song is catchy as hell, by the way.



Mariah Carey - I'll Be There (6/20-6/27)

 What a killer rendition of this song. I mean, I feel like, even if you don't like Mariah Carey, you have to admit there's something kind of amazing going on here. I think MTV Unplugged was a really good thing in many ways.

I guess this is a double A side single, but it's really weird to me to be soooo familiar with one of them ("California Love") and to be completely clueless when it comes to the other one.

This is one of 5 songs from my own personal Mariah Carey mix. I love this song quite a lot.

Throwback Thursday: 1999 (2 Weeks at #1)

If there's a song that spent, for instance, 1 week at #1 in one calendar year and then a second week in the subsequent calendar year, I'll post it in the first year it peaked.

Mariah Carey featuring Jay-Z - Heartbreaker (10/9-10/16)

What a weird combination of elements. Jay-Z, Good/Evil Mariah Carey, Jerry O'Connell, Bathroom Kung Fu Fights, Olivia Newton-John Mariah Carey. I mean, this video has everything, doesn't it?

Enrique Iglesias - Bailamos (9/4-9/11)

This was from when he was still mostly known as "Julio's son", if I recall correctly. I think "Hero" in 2001 was what changed that. Let the rhythm take you over...

Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time (1/30-2/6)

How on EARTH can this late 90's staple have only spent 2 weeks at #1?? That is insane. It feels like this one should have been up at the top for months!

Brandy - Have You Ever? (1/16-1/23)

If "...Baby One More Time" became a staple of 1999 MTV, then I feel like this Brandy song was all over VH1 at around the same time. This is a song you don't hear very often anymore.

Throwback Thursday: 1998 (1 Week at #1)

A whopping THREE songs hit #1 for just one week in 1998. And I am VERY familiar with one of them. Enjoy the eclectic mix today!

Divine - Lately (11/28)

I don't know this one from the title, but now that it's playing, I suppose it kind of rings a bell. Maybe? I guess Divine were trying to fill the space between TLC and Destiny's Child? This song is pretty catchy. I like it!

Barenaked Ladies - One Week (10/17)

Winning the award for most appropriate title of a song for this feature, we have the song that really busted BNL into the mainstream. It was their first and only #1 and one of two Top 40 hits for the band (the other was "Pinch Me" a couple of years later.)

Mariah Carey - My All (5/23)

I don't know this Mariah Carey song, I don't think. I pretty much lost track of her until 2005 after "Honey" which was the single directly before this one. And actually, listening to the chorus, this sounds vaguely familiar. You know, I do tend to like MC songs.

It's no surprise that this song holds the record for most weeks at number 1 (16 weeks).
