Throwback Thursday: 1998 (2 Weeks at #1)

All HUGE hits today on Throwback Thursday. I can't believe that all of these songs only spent 2 weeks at #1. They're all great (Yes, even that Celine song is great in small doses) so I'm not going to do individual intros. Enjoy!

Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing) (11/14-11/21)

Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On (2/28-3/7)

Usher - Nice & Slow (2/14-2/21)

Janet Jackson - Together Again (1/31-2/7)

Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply (1/17-1/24)

Top Ten Tuesday: Meghan Trainor "No"

It's amazing what a big difference a big video budget can make. There's almost too much happening in this one. I like the message, but it's not exactly my cup of tea in terms of style, I guess.

Still, cool that Ms. Trainor has made it back to the Top Ten

New Countdown: 1000 Posts!!!

Cold War Kids
Well on one hand I'm really proud of my accomplishment of reaching 1000 blog posts. On the other hand, it's taken almost just shy of 9 years, but I mean there were a couple of years before the podcast started that I didn't do very much blogging at all.

So here is the 1000th post, which serves as home base for the 286th podcast. My how far we've come!

Throwback Thursday: 1999 (2 Weeks at #1)

If there's a song that spent, for instance, 1 week at #1 in one calendar year and then a second week in the subsequent calendar year, I'll post it in the first year it peaked.

Mariah Carey featuring Jay-Z - Heartbreaker (10/9-10/16)

What a weird combination of elements. Jay-Z, Good/Evil Mariah Carey, Jerry O'Connell, Bathroom Kung Fu Fights, Olivia Newton-John Mariah Carey. I mean, this video has everything, doesn't it?

Enrique Iglesias - Bailamos (9/4-9/11)

This was from when he was still mostly known as "Julio's son", if I recall correctly. I think "Hero" in 2001 was what changed that. Let the rhythm take you over...

Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time (1/30-2/6)

How on EARTH can this late 90's staple have only spent 2 weeks at #1?? That is insane. It feels like this one should have been up at the top for months!

Brandy - Have You Ever? (1/16-1/23)

If "...Baby One More Time" became a staple of 1999 MTV, then I feel like this Brandy song was all over VH1 at around the same time. This is a song you don't hear very often anymore.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ariana Grande "Dangerous Woman"

So this song doesn't have a video yet, but it's premiering on the chart at #10, so I wanted to post about it. So, here's Ariara..... from SNL (you'll get it if you watch the SNL video) and then I'll post the official audio.

Throwback Thursday: 1990 (1 Week at #1) (Part 2)

In 1990, there were 12 songs that only spent 1 week at #1. Last week we looked at 6 songs that did it in the last 3 months of the year. (Amazing!) Here are the rest!

Nelson - (Can't Live Without Your) Love & Affection (9/29)

So they're twins and they're the only ones in their band with blonde hair. This is a pretty straightforward example of the kind of stuff that Nirvana took out, right? I did like the part where the one guy wanted to play and the other guy wanted to look at girls. And then they started singing and looked around when their voices were amplified.

Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory (9/8)

I've never seen either of the Young Guns movies. Are they worth checking out? This song was the theme to Young Guns II. I've previously mentioned that I love music videos that feature shots from the movie they're from. This is no exception. Though it does make me wonder: Why would you put a drive-in theater THERE?

Sweet Sensation - If Wishes Came True (9/1)

Another in the long procession of #1 songs by a trio of R&B women (see also: The Supremes, TLC, Destiny's Child).  This isn't the most groundbreaking song, but it's not terrible.

Wilson Phillips - Hold On (6/9)

I'm astounded that this only spent 1 week at #1. I guess it's taken on more of a nostalgia presence, but this feels like it was a HUGE song. And I still love it.

Tommy Page - I'll Be Your Everything (4/14)

So, I'm not making fun, but have we checked that Neville Longbottom didn't travel back in time and change his name to Tommy Page?

Taylor Dayne - Love Will Lead You Back (4/7)

Think about all those years Taylor Dayne spent living the high life as THE "Taylor" of pop music (First Name Division). And then...SHE came along and ruined EVERYTHING!
